These guards are tight, woven sleeves that you slip your brushes into, so that they squeeze the brush hairs, returning any fray hairs to their original place. You can read more about the benefits of the brush guard here. They also come in a variety of sizes, making it easy to use them on shadow, foundation, kabuki, etc. brushes. I have the variety pack, which is great since I have so many different sized brushes from different brands. The variety pack costs only $9.95 on Beautylish, a great, low price for a product that can extend the lifespan of my expensive brushes!
Personally, I slip these guards on my brushes whenever I'm not using my brushes, especially right after I wash my makeup brushes. I also slip them onto my brushes and throw them in my makeup bag when I need my brushes later in the day.
One huge tip I would give about these guards, however, is to be careful on how you use them. You're supposed to slip these guards from the bottom of the brush and pull them up until they cover the brush hairs. DO NOT slip them top to bottom, or else your brushes will become more frayed! I had to learn that the hard way...
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend looking into the brush guards and getting a variety pack for your brushes. I've been using them for about a month now, and can see my brushes going back to their original state. Although I can't really tell about the "bacteria fighting" portion of the guards, these guards are great for getting my brushes back in shape!
